Mavis Moore, Case Manager
Success Story | Mavis Moore learned about the Senior Community Service Employment Program (SCSEP) after being enrolled in the Ticket to Work program offered by Vocational Rehabilitation, who partners with the Winston-Salem Urban League to help close employment barriers for older and disabled workers. Following her career as a medical professional of more than 30 years, Ms. Moore desired to gain work experience in a new field and enrolled in SCSEP to train as a Case Manager. The Case Management position is a position that works directly with administering the day to day operations of the SCSEP program. In training as a Case Manager, Mavis has developed a new career path that she would have never envisioned had she not enrolled in the program. SCSEP has additionally proven valuable to her since serving in this role has prepared her with many of the skill sets she needs to fill other positions.
Mavis says, “SCSEP has helped me to gain the new skills that I desired as well as other skills that I need to compete in today’s job market. It has granted me the opportunity to build new and meaningful relationships with others. Since being enrolled in the program, I have been introduced to support service resource where I learned to budget and successfully manage my household bills. Because of my budgetary training, I now have a more comfortable lifestyle and have been able to purchase a new car with the extra money that I earn from SCSEP.”
Mavis is currently enrolled in a computer training course offered by the program’s funding source, where she is learning the different aspects of computer functions and expanding her knowledge to effectively navigate these new skills. As a Case Manager, Ms. Moore has gained the insight and knowledge to assess others and enroll them in the SCSEP program. As typical in Case Management positions, she has acquired the skills to complete Individual Employment Plans (IEP) for other job seekers enrolled in the program by identifying barriers, accomplishments, and setting goals for them to successfully overcome life’s challenges.
Ms. Moore said she is thrilled and enjoys having somewhere to go everyday where she is able to engage with other people. She recommends SCSEP to those who face employment and personal barriers. She says that she found SCSEP as a way to escape isolation and to satisfy her need to improve her self-confidence.
