WASHINGTON, DC (December 2, 2017) Last night, National Urban League President and CEO, Marc H. Morial and Winston-Salem Urban League President and CEO, James Perry, released the following statements expressing opposition to the Senate’s passage of the so-called “tax reform” bill:

Marc Morial:
“Despite widespread opposition and public outcry, tonight the U.S. Senate passed a dangerous tax package that directly undermines the economic advancement of low- and middle-income Americans through cuts to key programs and services.

“To be clear, this is not a tax reform bill. What the Senate passed without fully reading is a massive giveaway for millionaires, billionaires, and corporations that will ultimately increase the hardship of ordinary American families, while also triggering crippling effects on the U.S. economy.

“This is also another move in a string of disturbing partisan actions that prioritizes the wants of a few over the needs of many.

“The National Urban League will continue to oppose this sham of a reform bill and any other legislation that seeks to fatten the pockets of the 1%, while amplifying the suffering of vulnerable people. Americans deserve true tax reform that makes everyone pay their fair share, and not a bill that slams the door to the American dream.”

James Perry:
“The City of Winston-Salem deserves better. We are struggling in the fight against poverty, child and senior hunger, housing affordability and an education system that faces many challenges. This tax bill threatens to destabilize the little progress we have achieved to date. If this bill becomes law, we have tough times ahead.”
