Effective July 1, the Winston-Salem Urban League will have new board leadership. On Tuesday, June 28, 2016, at its annual meeting, the membership elected nine directors to the Board. Dr. Chere Gregory, Vice-Chair and Chair of the Nominating Committee announced the new directors:

  • Marquis H. Barnett,
  • Tim W. Bell,
  • Hana T.Carson,
  • Gerri Johns,
  • Marcus T. Lane,
  • Jimmy L. Norwood, Jr,
  • Gregory Scotts Parks,
  • James W. Shaw, Jr., and
  • Quintin Williams.

Dr. Gregory remarked, “rarely have I seen such an exciting cross section of smart, committed leaders ready to unify behind an organization.”

The evening was bittersweet as several directors terms expired. Tamara Smith, Board Secretary thanked:

  • Evelyn Acree,
  • Beaufort Bailey,
  • Ron Weatherford and
  • Sofia Porter.

Smith led a tribute honoring Evelyn Acree, the longtime Chair of the Board. Smith remarked, “For many of us, Evelyn’s name is synonymous with leadership, synonymous with service, synonymous with trust, synonymous with virtue. Evelyn’s name is synonymous with the Urban League. We are quite sad to see her go.”

The room swelled with emotion as Smith honored Acree for her service. Acree remarked, “I am confident and at peace with my departure. They say you should leave things better than they were when you found them. And I can confidently say, that the Winston-Salem Urban League is better now than it was when I found it. And you know what they say ‘once an Urban Leaguer always an Urban Leaguer’.”
