North Carolina Urban Leagues Call for Lieutenant Governor Mark Robinson’s Resignation Over Disturbing Comments
September 20, 2024 – As organizations committed to the promotion of equity, dignity, and justice for all, we are deeply troubled and appalled by the recent revelations concerning North Carolina Lieutenant Governor Mark Robinson’s past comments. The documented remarks, in which Mr. Robinson referred to himself as a “Black Nazi,” expressed support for slavery, and issued abhorrent statements against marginalized communities, fly in the face of everything we stand for as an organization and as a society.
These statements, made over a prolonged period, reveal a disturbing pattern of hateful, racist, sexist, and homophobic rhetoric that is wholly unacceptable for any public official, let alone someone who seeks the highest office in our state. Mr. Robinson’s words directly harm the very communities he is supposed to represent, particularly Black, Jewish, LGBTQ+, and Muslim individuals. His offensive remarks about civil rights leaders, including Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., along with his defense of oppressive systems like slavery, only deepen the harm.
North Carolina deserves a leader who reflects the values of unity, justice, and respect for all people—someone who works to uplift, not tear down, the diverse communities that make our state strong. Therefore, the Winston Salem Urban League and Urban League of Central Carolinas call on Mr. Robinson to immediately resign from his position as Lieutenant Governor of North Carolina and withdraw his bid for governor. His continued presence in office not only undermines public trust but also emboldens intolerance and divisiveness at a time when our state needs healing and progress.
We stand in solidarity with all those affected by Mr. Robinson’s words and actions. We will continue to fight for a future where North Carolina is led by individuals who champion justice, equality, and human dignity for all.
