There are two parts to the Summer Youth Employment Program. The first is based on the concept of getting teens involved in an organization that is in line with their future career goals. We do this through the personal statement of their applications, where we ask them to define what their career goals are, and what they hope to learn about outsider of those goals. When placement time comes around, we do our best to both recruit host sites that align with the majority of our interns goals, as well as place those interns with those sites. If their primary...

Betty Ann Falkner (below) with Center for Smart Financial Choices spent Wednesday, July 12 making sure our youth understood what was their money and what [caption id="attachment_16151" align="alignright" width="150"] Intern discussing banking options with Allegacy representative[/caption] was the bank's money, as they were presented the option to open accounts with BB&T and Allegacy Credit Union. Allegacy encouraged our youth to apply for the scholarships they have available for college. SYEP staff want our youth to get...

As I stood in Samaritan Ministries, it all flashed before my eyes. I remember the first day the participants were dropping off their applications, to the day they interviewed and wrote they wanted to work in Samaritan Ministry soup kitchen. The application period was hectic for sure, but overall, we know it was worth it! Orientation was a lot of fun as well, as we met the interns and their parents (and watched Kismet and Joy take countless selfies…). Orientation was a period of making sure that all the students knew what to expect when...
